Timeslips to TurboLaw: How to print a worksheet in TurboLaw Time and Billing

January 29, 2009

TutorialToday’s tip is for people who are switching to TurboLaw Time and Billing after having previously used Timeslips.

One of our customers, a former user of Timeslips, called asking if she could print worksheets in TurboLaw Time and Billing. If you’ve been wondering the same thing – here’s your answer!

Our customer explained that the type of “worksheet” she used to print was just a list (a grid, really) of the time/expenses for a particular client or staff member. Since TurboLaw Time and Billing allows you to print just about anything you see on your screen, all you need to do is just bring up a list of the time/expenses for a client or staff member and you can print that out as a “worksheet.”

For a client, you do this by first double-clicking the client’s name from the Clients list. Then, click either the Time/Work button or the Expenses button (circled in red in the picture below), and choose Edit Time/Work or Edit Expenses.

This will open a new window which shows you the time and expenses for this client.

Note the Print button (we’ve circled it in red) in the top-left corner of the window – this means that you can print what you see on the screen!

Just click the Print button to print out the list that you see – this is your worksheet! (You can also choose Print Preview and save the results as a PDF, or add watermarks, headings, and other options – or choose Page Setup to make changes to the page margins.)

If you would rather see the time and expenses for a particular staff member, just switch to the Staff list, select the staff member you’d like to view work for and then click on View Work (circled in red in the picture below).

The same sort of window will open up as shown previously, except now it will list time and expense entries for that staff member, instead of for a client. You can print the list just the same as before.

TurboLaw Time and Billing allows you to print just about anything you see in the program – most windows have a Print button in the upper-left corner, and if you see a print button – you can print what you see!

Although the terminology used in TurboLaw Time and Billing is sometimes different from other billing programs (we try to stick with “plain English”), you’ll find that you can still do most – if not all – of the same things. Of course if you are not sure how to do something, just contact us and we’ll be happy to help you!

New Video Tutorials for TurboLaw Time and Billing

July 2, 2008

We are very happy to announce two new self-help video tutorials for TurboLaw Time and Billing:

You can also find both of these new video tutorials in our How-To Videos section.

The first video tutorial will guide you through how to save your TurboLaw Time and Billing data file onto your network so that you can open it from multiple computers. If you were unsure as to how to use TurboLaw Time and Billing on your network, this short video will answer your questions.

The second video tutorial will guide you through using the “mail merge” feature of Microsoft Word to create a mail merge document from your TurboLaw Time and Billing client list. This can be used to create many types of mail merge documents, such as mailing labels, envelopes, and letters.

You can also use the mail merge function in other programs as well, such as Microsoft Works, Corel® WordPerfect®, StarOffice™/OpenOffice.org Writer, etc. The basic principle is the same, although the specific steps will vary – consult your product’s help file or documentation if you are not sure.

We hope you find these two new video tutorials helpful!

Where’s my “Edit Document” button?

June 18, 2007

One of the most common questions we hear from customers is “Where is the ‘Edit Document’ button?” This is because the Edit Document button (actually, the entire TurboLaw toolbar) is what is known as an “add-in” to Microsoft Word. Unfortunately, due to the “nature of the beast,” toolbars and add-ins can apparently “vanish” for a variety of reasons – and the way to get them back is not always the same.

Complicating the issue somewhat is the fact that the new version of Word, Microsoft Office Word 2007, does not use “toolbars” at all – at least, not in the same sense as all the previous versions of Word. Toolbars (and any other commands used by add-ins) have been moved to a tab in Word 2007 called (appropriately enough), “Add-ins.” However, even here the TurboLaw toolbar can “vanish” for various reasons. And because of the fact that Word 2007 doesn’t use toolbars anymore, it is not trivial to bring back the toolbar anymore, as it was in prior versions of Word.

Because of this, we have updated our series of articles describing how to restore the TurboLaw toolbar (and the “Edit Document” button) for Word 2007. The older articles on how to bring back the toolbar and the “Edit Document” button have been updated with a new video showing exactly how it is done, while the newer articles describe a quick and easy download to bring back the toolbar in Word 2007.

We hope that you find these new articles helpful!

Where is my “Add/Remove/Rename” button?

May 30, 2007

In TurboLaw 2.60, the old Add Remove Rename Button was itself renamed to Open this Folder. Instead of opening a TurboLaw window, the new button simply opens the folder where TurboLaw is saving your documents – right in Windows itself. (Technically, this view is a “Windows Explorer” window.)

The new Open this Folder button has replaced it

From this window, you can add, remove, or rename any file you see.

Adding files is easy – just drag & drop them into the folder, or use copy & paste, or whatever method you are comfortable using. Since you are just copying (or moving) a file from one folder to another on your computer, you do not need to remember any new special way of doing it. Adding a file to your TurboLaw case folder is no different than adding a file to any other folder on your computer.

Removing a file is also easy – and with this new window, it is also safer. Just select the file (or files) you want to remove and press the “Delete” key on your keyboard; or right-click and choose “Delete;” or click the “Delete” button on the Windows Explorer window toolbar. In other words, you can delete the file (or files) just as you would any other file on your computer. The extra safety comes from the fact that files deleted from your computer will go to your recycle bin, instead of just being deleted immediately – the same as any other file on your computer. So if you make a mistake, you can recover your work. (Assuming you haven’t emptied the recycle bin, of course!)

Renaming a file, as you can probably guess, is also very easy. You rename a file in TurboLaw the same way you rename any other file on your computer. You can right-click on the file and choose “Rename,” or use any of the other ways that Windows Explorer allows you to rename a file.

So if you were wondering what happened to the old “Add/Remove/Rename” button, now you know – it has been replaced by the new “Open this Folder” button, which allows you to do everything you did before – only now it is easier, and more in-line with the way you add, remove, or rename files elsewhere on your computer. As always, we are only seeking to help make it easier for you to get your work done!

New Video Tutorial: How to Manage User Templates

April 27, 2007

User Templates are one of the most powerful features of TurboLaw, allowing you to edit the built-in forms to suit your own particular needs. If you don’t like the boilerplate language that we’ve created, you can change it yourself – and have that change affect all future documents that you make.

However, because it is such a powerful feature, some people are (understandably) a little bit confused about how to use it. If you’re one of those people, you can view our latest video tutorial: How to Manage User Templates.

We hope you find it helpful!

New Video Tutorial: How to Edit Documents

March 12, 2007

We’ve posted a new video tutorial over at the Help Center called How to Edit Documents. This video will walk you through how to edit protected TurboLaw documents, and addresses some of the most common frustrations people have with our documents – including the dreaded Microsoft Word error “Error! Reference Source Not Found.”

We also walk you through how to edit tables, which are used in many TurboLaw documents (especially court forms). So hop on over, or click here to take a look right now!

TurboLaw Toolbar Help

January 5, 2007

Because Microsoft Word sometimes takes it upon itself to hide or delete the TurboLaw toolbar completely, we have added the a Help Center article to help people re-install their TurboLaw toolbar. This article includes a convenient download that will install the toolbar for you – you don’t need to do anything else.

To view the article and get your toolbar back, click here.
