Coming Soon: Windows 7 Jump Lists

If you’re using Windows 7, you may have heard of or seen a feature which is new to Windows 7, called “jump lists.” These handy little shortcuts allow you to right-click on any program’s icon in the task bar and perform certain functions. (They also give you similar shortcuts if the icon is on your start menu.)

Here at TurboLaw, we like shortcuts – anything to save time and require fewer clicks to get things done – so for the next version of TurboLaw Time and Billing (due out this month), we’ve added support for Windows 7 jump lists!

With this new version, if you are using TurboLaw Time and Billing and Windows 7, you will be able to access these handy shortcuts for showing the stopwatch, entering a new client, entering time, entering expenses, or performing a search – even if you don’t have the program open!

Our (anecdotal and totally unscientific) research suggests that many of you are using Windows 7 – either because you’ve upgraded, or because you got a new computer that came with it. If you are, then you’ll be able to use these handy new shortcuts.

Not using Windows 7? Don’t worry – we haven’t forgotten about you. You can still access the same shortcuts by right-clicking the TurboLaw Time and Billing icon which appears in the notification area, next to the clock in the bottom-right of your task bar.

We hope you find these new features and shortcuts helpful, and as always, we welcome your feedback!

Coming Soon: Custom Billing Rates per Client

You asked for it, and we listened – in the next version of TurboLaw Time and Billing you’ll have the ability to set custom billing rates on a per-client or per-matter basis.

We’ve worked very hard to make sure that this new feature does not ruin the simplicity and ease-of-use that TurboLaw Time and Billing is famous for.

Custom billing rates can be set to apply to just a particular client or to a particular matter. Once set, the custom billing rate will be used whenever you bill for time for that client (or matter) using that particular staff member. This allows you to  have a “default” billing rate that will be used normally, unless you override it for a particular client (or matter).

This is an exciting new feature and we’re very happy to be able to bring it to you.

We listen to the feedback we receive from all of our users – so don’t hesitate to let us know what you think of TurboLaw Time and Billing or what features you’d like to see in future versions.

TurboLaw 2.80 Sneak Peek: Search for Help

Here at TurboLaw, we feel that being able to get help when you need it is very important. Even the most expert of users sometimes need a little bit of help – whether it’s looking up how to do something you don’t do very often, or just refreshing your memory on  how a feature works.

One of the new features in TurboLaw 2.80 makes it even easier to get help when you need it – we call it the “Search for Help” box.

Search for help box
Above: the “Search for Help” box

This new help box appears in the very top-right corner of TurboLaw, so it is always visible. If you need help with something, just type your question (or a few words about what you need help with) into this box and either press Enter or click the magnifying glass icon next to the box.

TurboLaw will take you to our amazing new Help Center and will automatically search the Help Center for whatever you typed into the box.

This feature puts the entire extensive TurboLaw Help Center library of articles, tutorials, and videos at your fingertips for easy access whenever you need it.

This is just one of the many changes we’ve made in version 2.80 to make TurboLaw even easier to use. Stay tuned for our final announcement of the release of TurboLaw 2.80, coming at the end of April or the very beginning of May!

TurboLaw 2.80 Sneak Peek: Deleting Things

It’s a fact of life that sometimes you do need to delete things on your computer – and that includes from TurboLaw. While we didn’t want to necessarily make it too easy to delete things, we did want to make it a little bit simpler, so we made some changes to the ways you delete things (cases and documents) in TurboLaw 2.80.

Deleting Files

Perhaps the most common thing you might need to delete in TurboLaw is one of your saved documents. Maybe it’s just an old document you don’t need anymore, or maybe you didn’t mean to make that document in the first place. Whatever the reason, you need to delete that file.

Previously, you had to click the Open this Folder button to open the folder for your case in Windows Explorer before you could delete a file. While you can still do this, in TurboLaw 2.80 you can now delete a file right from your list of Saved Documents – just right-click and choose Delete File or just press the Delete key on your keyboard with the file highlighted.

Saved Documents right-click menu

TurboLaw will delete your file in exactly the same way as if you had clicked the Open this Folder button and deleted it normally through Windows Explorer – you get the same prompt about deleting a file and sending it to the Recycle Bin.

If you need to delete multiple files all at once, or if you just prefer to do it the old-fashioned way, you can still click the Open this Folder button and delete your files from Windows Explorer, if you prefer.

Deleting Cases

Occasionally, you may need to delete an entire case from TurboLaw. In TurboLaw 2.80, you can do his by right-clicking the case’s name and choosing Delete Case or by selecting the case and pressing the Delete key on your keyboard.

Previous versions of TurboLaw would show you two different prompts before deleting your case, to make sure you really, really meant to do it (since deleting a case cannot be undone – there is no “Recycle Bin” for cases).

TurboLaw 2.80 reduces this to just one prompt, but it makes it much more obvious that what you are doing cannot be undone, and that you should be sure you really mean to delete this case forever.

Delete Case Confirmation

As before, you must still type the word “Yes” into the box before TurboLaw will allow you to delete a case – this is to prevent you from accidentally clicking on the Delete button if you are perhaps a little too quick with your mouse clicks. However, now the prompt for entering the word “Yes” is contained right on the same prompt that warns you about what you are about to do, so there is just this one warning, instead of two.

If you don’t enter the word “Yes” (it doesn’t matter if you type it with capital or lower case letters), your case will not be deleted – even if you clicked the Delete button.

This is just another way that we’ve made TurboLaw 2.80 even easier – and safer! - to use.

TurboLaw 2.80 Sneak Peek: Better Printing

Although the most common thing you print from TurboLaw are the documents and forms, there are other things in TurboLaw that can be printed – such as case notes, document messages, or even your entire list of cases.

TurboLaw 2.80 has made significant improvements to your ability to print case notes, document messages, and your list of cases.

Now you can print directly from TurboLaw (without having to open Notepad first), as well as view a Print Preview. In addition, from the Print Preview window you can choose to export what you see to a PDF or one of several other file formats.

This is just one of the many changes we’ve made in version 2.80 to make TurboLaw even easier to use. Stay tuned this month as we highlight some of the other changes coming in version 2.80 (and you can expect to see 2.80 for yourself when it is released at the end of April)!

TurboLaw 2.80 Sneak Peek: Sort Everything

The next version of TurboLaw Document Software (version 2.80) is coming soon – currently scheduled for the end of April or the beginning of May – and we’ve got a preview of some of the features of this new version.

Another small (but handy!) feature coming in version 2.80 is the ability to sort just about anything in the program.

Anywhere you see a list of things in TurboLaw, you’ll probably also see a column heading (see the picture below). You can click on these column headings to sort the items in the list – and click it again to reverse the sort.

Document sorted
Above: the list of documents, sorted in reverse order

By default, all lists are sorted alphabetically (A-Z), but if you are looking for something that would be near the end of the list, now you can just click the column heading and it will sort in reverse alphabetical order (Z-A) so you don’t have to scroll through the entire list to find what you need.

This feature is available in the list of cases as well as anywhere TurboLaw displays a list of documents.

This is just one of a great number of very small improvements we’ve made to TurboLaw – but we think that lots of small improvements can really add up to a great user experience. Stay tuned this month as we highlight some of the other changes coming in version 2.80!

TurboLaw 2.80 Sneak Peek: Cancel Anything

Sometimes you are doing something in TurboLaw that takes a long time (e.g., performing a backup, or creating a large new document) but it turns out you didn’t want to do it, and you just want to be able to cancel what you started without having to wait for it to finish.

In previous versions of TurboLaw, this was impossible – you had to wait until the program was done. This has all changed in TurboLaw 2.80.

Creating a document: progress bar

TurboLaw now lets you cancel any long-running operation at any time – you don’t have to wait if you don’t want to.

Additionally, TurboLaw 2.80 uses the power of modern multi-core CPUs better, which means while it is performing these long-running operations, your computer remains responsive – you won’t get that “Switch to/Retry” window, and TurboLaw won’t appear to “freeze” while doing some long-running operation.

This is just one of the many changes we’ve made in version 2.80 to make TurboLaw even easier to use. Stay tuned this month as we highlight some of the other changes coming in version 2.80, scheduled to be released at the end of April (or very early in May)!

TurboLaw 2.80 Sneak Peek: Automatic Column Sizing

The next version of TurboLaw Document Software (version 2.80) is coming soon – and we’ve got a preview of some of the features of this new version.

TurboLaw displays a lot of things in what are known as “list views;” that is, lists of things with columns. Examples include the list of cases and lists of document names.

In previous versions of TurboLaw, these columns had a fixed size, and because of this, some things with long names (especially some document names – which can be quite long) would be truncated so you couldn’t see the whole name. In order to see the whole name, you had to manually re-size the column.

In TurboLaw 2.80, you won’t have to do this anymore – TurboLaw automatically sizes the columns to fit the largest item in the list.

Column re-sizing in action
Above: column re-sizing in action (click to see a larger version)

Additionally, if there is something with a really long name in the list, TurboLaw will add a scroll bar to the bottom of the list so you can scroll to the right and see the whole item.

This is just one of a great number of very small improvements we’ve made to TurboLaw – but we think that lots of small improvements can really add up to a great user experience. Stay tuned this month as we highlight some of the other changes coming in version 2.80!

Changes in TurboLaw 2.80 – Quick Summary

TurboLaw 2.80 is coming soon (currently scheduled for the end of April or the very beginning of May), and to help everyone understand what’s changing (and what isn’t), here’s a quick summary of “what’s new” in TurboLaw version 2.80:

No More UAC Prompts

UAC (for “User Account Control”) is a feature of Windows Vista and Windows 7, and it causes those “this program needs your permission to continue” boxes to pop up sometimes. In the case of TurboLaw, you received this prompt every time you opened TurboLaw.

Starting in TurboLaw 2.80, you won’t get this prompt anymore, as we’ve removed the requirement from TurboLaw that made Windows display the prompt in the first place.

No more UAC prompt in TurboLaw

Gone is the UAC prompt from TurboLaw

Ordinary users will be happy that there’s one less prompt popping up in your face, but network and IT admins will love that this means that TurboLaw no longer requires administrative rights in order to run. For those who use TurboLaw on a Windows Terminal Server or in a Citrix environment, this will make life a lot easier.

No More “Error! Reference source not found!” Messages

When you create a document for a case in TurboLaw 2.80, it looks for the “reference fields” that can cause this message and replaces them with normal grey-shaded form fields. Once all the reference fields have been replaced, it is no longer possible for you to receive the “Error! Reference source not found” message anymore.

Better Spell Check

TurboLaw 2.80 includes changes to make it so that you can check the spelling of words in form fields, which Microsoft Word normally ignores. It also includes a handy Check Spelling button on an updated TurboLaw Toolbar that not only checks the spelling of words in form fields, but it can check the spelling of a document that is currently protected (locked for editing) – something that Word’s own spell-check cannot do.

Additionally, these changes mean that if you do un-protect a document (by using the Edit Document button), Microsoft Word will draw the “red squiggly” underline under misspelled words, even if they are in the gray shaded form fields.

No More “Lost” Forms

When you opened a “blank” form in TurboLaw, the form you were opening was saved temporarily to a “temporary” folder, and it was up to you to remember to use Save As to save the file somewhere permanent if you wanted to keep it. If you didn’t save it somewhere permanent, the file would be lost when the temporary folder was emptied.

In TurboLaw 2.80, you will now be prompted to save your blank form right when you first open it, so you know it’s been saved somewhere permanent and won’t be lost or deleted by accident.

Auto-Sizing Columns and Better Sorting

Some document names in TurboLaw are quite long, and in certain places in the program, it was hard to see what the full name of a document was – especially if there were several that all had similar names.

Starting in TurboLaw 2.80, the columns for document names – as well as for every other column in the program – will automatically change size to fit whatever is being displayed. This way you’ll always be able to see the full document name easily.

Additionally, we’ve added some columns to part of the program that didn’t have them previously, so that you can click on the column heading to sort the list of documents, files, or other information.

Better Network Setup Assistant

The Network Setup Assistant has been completely revised in TurboLaw 2.80, streamlining the process of networking TurboLaw so you can share data between multiple users.

“Search for Help” Built In

In TurboLaw 2.80, you’ll find a “Search for Help” box in the top-right corner of the program. This box lets you easily search our new and improved on-line help center, so that you can get the answers to your questions quickly.

Better Printing Features

We’ve greatly improved the built-in printing abilities of TurboLaw 2.80. In particular, you can now display a “print preview” of things like document messages, case notes, and the full case list. Additionally, this “print preview” window also allows you to export what you see into various file formats, such as PDF, Word, Excel, or several other formats.

Cancel Anything

Certain operations in TurboLaw (for example, creating a document) can sometimes take a while to complete. Previously, you simply had to wait until they were done – there was no option to stop or cancel what was happening.

In TurboLaw 2.80, you now have the option to cancel any long-running operation (e.g., creating a document).

Better Window Resizing

This new version of TurboLaw is much smarter about window sizes, with a much more consistent behavior among all the windows of the program.

No More “Minimized” TurboLaw

Previous versions of TurboLaw would sometimes open up “minimized” at the bottom of your screen, if you had previously closed the program while it was minimized. As of 2.80, TurboLaw will always open up on your screen, and never minimized to start with, so you don’t have to go looking for it.

Saved Document Icons

In TurboLaw 2.80, when you are viewing the list of saved documents for a case, the documents and files now have the same icons you would see in Windows Explorer.

New Tutorial Link

TurboLaw 2.80 includes a new video tutorial link, which takes you to our on-line help center’s video tutorial section. These on-line tutorials are much more comprehensive than the old tutorial.

Customer Experience Improvement Program

The new version of TurboLaw now includes the option for our Customer Experience Improvement Program, which records anonymous usage statistics and sends them back to us. This lets us know how people are using TurboLaw so we can make even more improvements in the future to the features that people actually use.

Better Error Handling

If TurboLaw 2.80 encounters an error it cannot recover from, it is now capable of reporting that error back to us so we can find ways to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Additionally, when an error does occur, you have the option to either exit the program or try to continue – which is useful if the error was just temporary (e.g., if you had accidentally unplugged your USB memory stick with your files on it while you were using TurboLaw).

Better Options & Settings

The various options & settings in TurboLaw 2.80 have been consolidated into a single, easy-to-understand Options & Settings window. This means that there is just one place to go to set all of the available options for TurboLaw, instead of several different menus and windows.

Better Help

Every window in TurboLaw is now linked to our revised Help file, so you can get context-sensitive help no matter where you are in the program.

This new help can be accessed by simply pressing the F1 key on your keyboard, or in some windows by clicking the little question-mark icon on the window’s title bar (just next to the “X” close button) and then clicking on the part of the window you want help with.

This is especially noticeable in the Options & Settings window, where the help which appears is specific to which tab you are looking at.

It Just Looks Nicer

Although making the program look “nicer” might not seem like a big deal, improving the visual appearance of the program has many subtle benefits. The consistent appearance with other Windows programs makes it easier to get started using TurboLaw, since it looks and works just like other programs you are used to using.

Some of the “nicer” look also includes features derived from newer versions of Windows (e.g., “task buttons” like on the Network Setup Assistant) which have been proven via extensive research to be easier to understand and more intuitive to use.

Finally, updating the look & feel of the program just makes it look nicer, and everyone can appreciate a nice, clean, modern appearance. A nice looking program may only add to your day-to-day happiness in a very small, infinitesimal amount, but every bit helps.

TurboLaw 2.80 Sneak Peek: Better Help

In addition to our new “Search for Help” box, we’ve also spruced up the regular “Help” menu in TurboLaw 2.80 to make it even more useful and, well, helpful!

Help Menu

In TurboLaw 2.80, we’ve made the existing help menu a little bit more conspicuous by adding  the universal “help” icon to the menu so that you can find it quickly.

Help menu - opened

We had made some improvements to the help menu in the previous version of TurboLaw, and we made even more improvements in 2.80.

As you can see, the new Help menu includes a “How do I…” option which shows you 3 of the top-asked questions in TurboLaw. Each of these options takes you to our amazing Help Center. We will continue to monitor the most frequently asked questions in TurboLaw and update this menu as time goes on.

This is just another one of the many small (but useful) changes we’ve made in TurboLaw 2.80. We’re sure that TurboLaw 2.80 will prove to be the easiest-to-use version of TurboLaw yet.
