Coming Soon: Custom Billing Rates per Client

You asked for it, and we listened – in the next version of TurboLaw Time and Billing you’ll have the ability to set custom billing rates on a per-client or per-matter basis.

We’ve worked very hard to make sure that this new feature does not ruin the simplicity and ease-of-use that TurboLaw Time and Billing is famous for.

Custom billing rates can be set to apply to just a particular client or to a particular matter. Once set, the custom billing rate will be used whenever you bill for time for that client (or matter) using that particular staff member. This allows you to  have a “default” billing rate that will be used normally, unless you override it for a particular client (or matter).

This is an exciting new feature and we’re very happy to be able to bring it to you.

We listen to the feedback we receive from all of our users – so don’t hesitate to let us know what you think of TurboLaw Time and Billing or what features you’d like to see in future versions.

TurboLaw Time and Billing 1.22 Released

TurboLaw Time and Billing version 1.22 has just been released with some great new features based on feedback from our customers.

The new features in this version are:

  • Automatic updates: when an update is available, TurboLaw Time and Billing will download it for you, and if you don’t click to install it yourself, the next time you open Time and Billing, the update will be installed automatically, so you always have the latest version.
  • New Templates: we’ve updated some of the default bill templates as well as added a totally new one, called “Acme.” This is a very simple, plain template that works well if you just need something straightforward for your bills – but it’s also a great starting point for creating your own custom template.
  • Sample data: speaking of templates, when you are customizing a bill or statement template, when you click on the “Preview” tab you will now see your template with some sample data so you can get a better idea of how it will look.
  • No more pop-up balloon tips: when you start TurboLaw Time and Billing, you will no longer see a pop-up balloon asking if you’ve noticed the icon which appears in your notification area (a.k.a. the system tray).
  • No more minimizing when clicking the “close” button: now, when you click the red “X” close button, TurboLaw Time and Billing will close, instead of minimizing itself as it previously did.
  • User-selectable spell-check language: instead of trying to guess which dialect of English you are using, TurboLaw Time and Billing now defaults to US English and you can select from several other variations (e.g., UK English) from the Options & Settings window.

As always, we hope that you enjoy this latest release of TurboLaw Time and Billing and all the new features and improvements we’ve made.

TurboLaw 2.81 Released

Following close on the heels of the last TurboLaw update, we’ve now released TurboLaw version 2.81 with a number of additional improvements which couldn’t make it into 2.80 due to time constraints. This new version continues the trend started in 2.80 of vastly improving the way TurboLaw works as well as refining the overall function of the program based on user feedback – including actual data received through our Customer Experience Improvement Program.

Some of the highlights of this version include:

  • TurboLaw Update has now been integrated directly into TurboLaw itself, so it is no longer a separate program
  • TurboLaw can now install updates automatically, instead of only just downloading them, so you don’t have to worry about watching for the update notification and remembering to click to install
  • TurboLaw now has a more granular program update capability, meaning updates can be delivered to you quicker
  • Based on actual user data received (anonymously) through our Customer Experience Improvement Program, we have removed the “Tip of the Day” from TurboLaw
  • You can now double-click to edit an attorney in the My Firm tab (or you can click the new Edit Attorney button)
  • The “Please wait while TurboLaw creates your document” window now shows more descriptive text describing what it is actually doing as it creates your document

We’ve also improved the wording on a number of windows and messages, as well as fixed a few minor sorting and window-size glitches that appear only under certain circumstances.

TurboLaw 2.80 Released

That’s right, it’s finally here! We are very happy to announce that TurboLaw version 2.80 has now been released! This is probably the biggest update to TurboLaw since it was originally introduced 9 years ago, and we are understandably very excited about it – and we think you will be too!

Throughout the month of April we’ve been giving you sneak peeks of some of the things that have changed and been improved in TurboLaw 2.80. We’ve also posted a list of most of the changes in one place, so you can read about them all in one place.

Although we’ve tweaked and improved almost everything in TurboLaw 2.80, you still use the software in the same way as before, so there’s no need to re-learn how to do things. Although the program looks a little bit different, many of the visual tweaks are just that – tweaks, not radical changes.

Here’s the list of what’s new or changed in this version of TurboLaw. (We’ve linked to some of the articles that were posted previously for more details if you are interested.)

TurboLaw users should receive a notification of this new update from your TurboLaw program shortly after you open it (if you have Automatic Updates turned on). If you don’t have Automatic Updates turned on, you can click the Update menu in TurboLaw and choose Check for Updates instead.

As you know, we always listen to feedback and suggestions from our customers – in fact, many of the changes in TurboLaw 2.80 are a direct result of suggestions from users! So if you have an idea or suggestion for TurboLaw, we’d love to hear from you.

TurboLaw Time and Billing 1.21 Released

We’ve just released version 1.21 of TurboLaw Time and Billing. This release is primarily a maintenance release, focusing mostly on some very minor issues. Although primarily a maintenance release, there are 2 new features in this release, and we do highly recommend that all users install this update once your software notifies you (watch for the notification in the bottom of your TurboLaw Time and Billing window!).

The 2 new features in this version are:

  • In the Account History window, if your client has matters listed, these matters will have a subtotal, just like the top-level items in this window.
  • In the Clients window, we’ve added a new column for Client ID which will either show your custom client ID number (if you’ve entered one), or TurboLaw Time and Billing’s own internal ID number if there is nothing else to display. This column can also be sorted, so you can use your client ID number to find clients quickly.

Both of these new features are the result of customer suggestions – so if you have suggestions or ideas of your own, please don’t hesitate to let us know!

TurboLaw 2.80 Sneak Peek: Search for Help

Here at TurboLaw, we feel that being able to get help when you need it is very important. Even the most expert of users sometimes need a little bit of help – whether it’s looking up how to do something you don’t do very often, or just refreshing your memory on  how a feature works.

One of the new features in TurboLaw 2.80 makes it even easier to get help when you need it – we call it the “Search for Help” box.

This new help box appears in the very top-right corner of TurboLaw, so it is always visible. If you need help with something, just type your question (or a few words about what you need help with) into this box and either press Enter or click the magnifying glass icon next to the box.

TurboLaw will take you to our amazing new Help Center and will automatically search the Help Center for whatever you typed into the box.

This feature puts the entire extensive TurboLaw Help Center library of articles, tutorials, and videos at your fingertips for easy access whenever you need it.

This is just one of the many changes we’ve made in version 2.80 to make TurboLaw even easier to use. Stay tuned for our final announcement of the release of TurboLaw 2.80, coming at the end of April or the very beginning of May!

TurboLaw 2.80 Sneak Peek: Deleting Things

It’s a fact of life that sometimes you do need to delete things on your computer – and that includes from TurboLaw. While we didn’t want to necessarily make it too easy to delete things, we did want to make it a little bit simpler, so we made some changes to the ways you delete things (cases and documents) in TurboLaw 2.80.

Deleting Files

Perhaps the most common thing you might need to delete in TurboLaw is one of your saved documents. Maybe it’s just an old document you don’t need anymore, or maybe you didn’t mean to make that document in the first place. Whatever the reason, you need to delete that file.

Previously, you had to click the Open this Folder button to open the folder for your case in Windows Explorer before you could delete a file. While you can still do this, in TurboLaw 2.80 you can now delete a file right from your list of Saved Documents – just right-click and choose Delete File or just press the Delete key on your keyboard with the file highlighted.

TurboLaw will delete your file in exactly the same way as if you had clicked the Open this Folder button and deleted it normally through Windows Explorer – you get the same prompt about deleting a file and sending it to the Recycle Bin.

If you need to delete multiple files all at once, or if you just prefer to do it the old-fashioned way, you can still click the Open this Folder button and delete your files from Windows Explorer, if you prefer.

Deleting Cases

Occasionally, you may need to delete an entire case from TurboLaw. In TurboLaw 2.80, you can do his by right-clicking the case’s name and choosing Delete Case or by selecting the case and pressing the Delete key on your keyboard.

Previous versions of TurboLaw would show you two different prompts before deleting your case, to make sure you really, really meant to do it (since deleting a case cannot be undone – there is no “Recycle Bin” for cases).

TurboLaw 2.80 reduces this to just one prompt, but it makes it much more obvious that what you are doing cannot be undone, and that you should be sure you really mean to delete this case forever.

Delete Case Confirmation

As before, you must still type the word “Yes” into the box before TurboLaw will allow you to delete a case – this is to prevent you from accidentally clicking on the Delete button if you are perhaps a little too quick with your mouse clicks. However, now the prompt for entering the word “Yes” is contained right on the same prompt that warns you about what you are about to do, so there is just this one warning, instead of two.

If you don’t enter the word “Yes” (it doesn’t matter if you type it with capital or lower case letters), your case will not be deleted – even if you clicked the Delete button.

This is just another way that we’ve made TurboLaw 2.80 even easier – and safer! - to use.

TurboLaw 2.80 Sneak Peek: Better Printing

Although the most common thing you print from TurboLaw are the documents and forms, there are other things in TurboLaw that can be printed – such as case notes, document messages, or even your entire list of cases.

TurboLaw 2.80 has made significant improvements to your ability to print case notes, document messages, and your list of cases.

Now you can print directly from TurboLaw (without having to open Notepad first), as well as view a Print Preview. In addition, from the Print Preview window you can choose to export what you see to a PDF or one of several other file formats.

This is just one of the many changes we’ve made in version 2.80 to make TurboLaw even easier to use. Stay tuned this month as we highlight some of the other changes coming in version 2.80 (and you can expect to see 2.80 for yourself when it is released at the end of April)!

TurboLaw 2.80 Sneak Peek: Sort Everything

The next version of TurboLaw Document Software (version 2.80) is coming soon – currently scheduled for the end of April or the beginning of May – and we’ve got a preview of some of the features of this new version.

Another small (but handy!) feature coming in version 2.80 is the ability to sort just about anything in the program.

Anywhere you see a list of things in TurboLaw, you’ll probably also see a column heading (see the picture below). You can click on these column headings to sort the items in the list – and click it again to reverse the sort.

By default, all lists are sorted alphabetically (A-Z), but if you are looking for something that would be near the end of the list, now you can just click the column heading and it will sort in reverse alphabetical order (Z-A) so you don’t have to scroll through the entire list to find what you need.

This feature is available in the list of cases as well as anywhere TurboLaw displays a list of documents.

This is just one of a great number of very small improvements we’ve made to TurboLaw – but we think that lots of small improvements can really add up to a great user experience. Stay tuned this month as we highlight some of the other changes coming in version 2.80!

TurboLaw 2.80 Sneak Peek: Cancel Anything

Sometimes you are doing something in TurboLaw that takes a long time (e.g., performing a backup, or creating a large new document) but it turns out you didn’t want to do it, and you just want to be able to cancel what you started without having to wait for it to finish.

In previous versions of TurboLaw, this was impossible – you had to wait until the program was done. This has all changed in TurboLaw 2.80.

TurboLaw now lets you cancel any long-running operation at any time – you don’t have to wait if you don’t want to.

Additionally, TurboLaw 2.80 uses the power of modern multi-core CPUs better, which means while it is performing these long-running operations, your computer remains responsive – you won’t get that “Switch to/Retry” window, and TurboLaw won’t appear to “freeze” while doing some long-running operation.
